Job Description

Description

Technical Writer & Guide Designer (Drones)

Introduction: Come join a growing organization in the UAS drone industry! Flightwave, a wholly owned subsidiary of Red Cat Holdings, has an immediate opening for a highly skilled and detail-oriented Technical Writer.

In this role, you will bridge the gap between engineering teams and customers by combining your skills in technical writing and UX/CX design. You will be responsible for creating clear, concise, and accurate technical documentation for engineering, product, training, and customer support teams, and external customers. Ideal candidates will also bring experience creating short-form training videos, explainer graphics, or even animations to support technical documentation. Your work will play a key role in enhancing our products' user experience and ensuring that technical information is accessible and comprehensible to a variety of stakeholders. Experience within the aerospace or drone industry is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to gather and understand technical information, ensuring documentation is technically accurate and aligned with engineering specifications.
  • Develop a wide range of customer-facing documents, including user manuals, update and/or installation guides, FAQs, release notes, troubleshooting guides, and online help content.
  • Create customer-facing graphics, diagrams, and ideally 2D / 3D animations
  • Ensure documentation is tailored to the audience, maintaining a balance between technical detail and clarity for end-users.
  • Assist with the creation of technical videos and related documentation.
  • Participate in reviews and revisions of technical content to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with company standards.
  • Work closely with product managers, engineers, and other subject matter experts to gather input and feedback for continuous improvement of documentation.
  • Help improve documentation processes, tools, and templates to streamline workflow and ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, standards, and best practices in technical writing, particularly within the aerospace or drone industry.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: 3-5 years of technical writing experience, preferably with a background in aerospace, UAVs, or related industries.
  • Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with technical concepts and terminology related to aerospace, UAVs, or similar high-tech fields.
  • Documentation Skills: Proven ability to create both engineering and customer-facing documentation that is clear, concise, and user-friendly.
  • Collaboration: Experience working closely with engineers and technical teams to gather, refine, and document complex technical information.
  • Writing Skills: Strong command of grammar, syntax, and writing conventions, with an eye for detail and clarity.
  • Tools & Software: Experience with industry-standard tools such as MS Suite, Adobe FrameMaker, Confluence, Git, or similar platforms. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) is a plus.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to break down complex technical concepts and present them in a straightforward, comprehendible format for diverse audiences.
  • Education: A degree in Technical Communication, English, Engineering, or a related field is preferred, though equivalent professional experience is acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with documentation for aerospace or drone-related products, including hardware/software manuals, specifications, user guides and compliance documentation.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards and safety requirements in the aerospace or UAV industries.
  • Experience working in agile development environments and using issue tracking or project management tools (e.g., JIRA, Arena, Confluence, Odoo).
  • Experience in Adobe tools (graphic design, basic animations or motion design, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Blender, Maya, Cinema 4D)

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, often involving writing, editing, and multimedia content creation.
  • Frequent use of visual display terminals (computer screens, tablets, etc.), requiring attention to detail for extended periods.
  • Occasional standing, walking, or moving between workspaces, meetings, or collaborative sessions.
  • Ability to participate in team meetings, reviews, and product demonstrations both virtually and in-person.
  • May require occasional visits to engineering labs, field sites, or drone testing areas to gather technical information or observe product use.
  • Capability to handle typical office materials, tools, and light multimedia equipment (e.g., cameras, microphones, etc.) if involved in video or training content production.
